During the first meeting with our client, Pat, he told us he owned a home on a bluff above the Snake River and he wanted to take full advantage of the 135 degree view of the river and redo the kitchen to a more modern and functional space. He works from his home and wanted to use part of the space as an office so he could see the river while he works. He also hoped to rework his laundry room, add storage space and create a workout room from two bedrooms that weren’t being used effectively.
The Plan:
When we visited the home, we saw an early 70’s vintage home that was built on a fantastic site that was a great custom home for the day. It has a large center beam and vaulted wood ceiling going through the main section of the house. There were walls dividing the dining, kitchen and family room which interrupted the views. The goal was to remove these walls so the space would be opened up. Pat is an active outdoorsman, so everything had to be easy care and functional. He also likes to cook so he needed a new well-designed kitchen with good storage.
Pat chose a natural wood look in textured laminate flat panel door style for the majority of the cabinets. This finish is durable and very easy care. We accented with dark charcoal painted finish cabinets on the upper cabinets on the back wall of the kitchen. All the major workspaces are very convenient to each other and create an efficient and attractive work space.
To expand the laundry, we moved a wall to accommodate the newly arranged space and created a storage alcove for bulk household and miscellaneous other items. We also reconfigured two bedrooms into a single, larger, workout room, complete with rubber floor.
All the walls, the wood ceiling and even the fireplace were painted a light neutral color, unifying and updating the spaces. The new woodwork throughout was custom stained to coordinate with the other colors used in the new design. We added new contemporary interior doors along with all new lighting.
